Two important indexes that affect the working efficiency of CNC engraving machine are machining speed and feed speed (also called step distance or cut): machining speed refers to the moving speed (generally 4-15m / rain) of the tool during the machining process, which mainly depends on the power of the tool shaft, the hardness of the wood, the cutting depth and the diameter of the tool; While the feed speed refers to the distance of each stroke (generally 0.05-0.5mm) during intermittent movement, which mainly depends on the diameter of the cutter, the complexity of carving and the requirements of carving surface accuracy.

Generally speaking, the type and diameter of the cutting tool should be selected according to the thickness and complexity of the carving line. The smaller the diameter of the cutting tool and the sharper the end, the more suitable for the complex carving work, but the lower the efficiency. After the cutter is selected, the higher the power of the cutter shaft, the lower the hardness of the wood and the shallower the cutting depth, the higher the machining speed; while the higher the feed speed, the greater the one-time milling amount and the higher the machining efficiency, but the rougher the surface of the workpiece, the greater the workload of the subsequent sanding operation.

NC Carving mainly relies on small-diameter cutters to mill the wood surface along the specified path to the desired shape. The milling amount per time is usually less than 0.5mm, so in fact, the production efficiency of NC carving is not high. Generally, a piece of 800mm × 100mm workpiece takes one to two hours for normal carving operation, and if the cutting amount is too large, it is easy to break the cutter or waste products 。 Generally speaking, the diameter (tip angle) and step distance of the cutter shall be determined according to the fineness of the carving product itself and the quality requirements of the carving product. Under the condition of ensuring the quality, the carving cutter with large diameter shall be selected as much as possible.

In the actual production, in order to improve the production efficiency of the CNC engraving machine, we usually consider from two aspects: first, the large area of the workpiece that needs to be chipped can be assisted by manual engraving; The other is to install a large-diameter flat base straight knife on the carving machine to preliminarily carve and mill the workpiece blank before the official carving operation, so as to form a relatively accurate carving blank. In this way, the depth of the cutting knife during the precision carving is small, so that the processing speed during the carving can be improved. Only by giving full play to the advantages of hand carving and mechanical carving, sharp knife and straight knife can the maximum efficiency of carving equipment be exerted.
